Online talk “Harnessing geothermal energy from mature oil and gas fields in the western Ukraine”.

18 January 2024 the Head of the board Taras Popadynets and Board member Yuliia Demchuk were honored to be invited to an online talk hosted by EAGE Local Chapter London as part of the Evening lecture series.

An online talk by Taras Popadynets and Yuliia Demchuk titled “Harnessing geothermal energy from mature oil and gas fields in the western Ukraine”.

Yuliia Demchuk started a presentation with overview of the general geothermal potential in Ukraine, the history of development, types of geothermal energy sources, provided a description of promising regions and an assessment of the technical potential of the electrical power of geothermal resources by regions. During the presentation, the geological structure of Transcarpathia, promising areas suitable for industrial use of geothermal resources and the causes of local temperature anomalies were considered.

Taras Popadynets jumped up the presentation with overview of the main models of using geothermal energy, opportunities for the oil and gas industry, the experience of repurposing abandoned and idle oil and gas wells into geothermal ones. Special attention was paid to well screening criteria, inspections and rig logistics, geothermal global innovation inputs and to next steps for geoenergy projects in Ukraine.
