06/2025

Geothermal Ukraine at the 86th EAGE Annual Conference & Exhibition.

We were proud to participate in the 86th EAGE Annual Conference & Exhibition, held in Toulouse, France, from 2–5 June 2025.

Our member Oleksandr Solodkyi, delivered a presentation titled: “Repurposing Oil and Gas Wells for Geothermal Energy Transition in Ukraine”.

During his talk, Oleksandr shared results from a recently completed project, GU in cooperation with Verkís Consulting Engineers under the Sustainable Development Goals Partnership Fund from Iceland.

“Preliminary Feasibility Study of the Direct Use of Geothermal Energy in Ukraine”. This study explored four case studies focused on harnessing the existing geothermal resources with the assessment of repurposing existing oil and gas infrastructure for direct geothermal use:

Heat and power generation in Mostyska area, Lviv region
Spa and wellness center in Bryukhovychi, Lviv region
Industrial applications (wood drying & pasteurization) in Transcarpathia
Greenhouse heating in Dolyna area, Ivano-Frankivsk region

He also highlighted our ongoing collaboration with TNO and DTESS under the support of the Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland (RVO) on the project: “Study on Geothermal Energy for Greenhouse Development in Lviv Region” This initiative evaluates the geothermal potential for agriculture based on oil and gas exploration subsurface well data, with a pilot underway in the Busk area.

The  case studies were presented alongside the EU based reference projects from BRGM TotalEnergies, TNO, VITO, GFZ, focusing on similar subject and sharing relevant experience, best practices with each other.

At Geothermal Ukraine, we’re proud to lead the way in unlocking Ukraine’s geothermal potential. We actively engage with stakeholders at both the national and EU levels to accelerate a sustainable energy transition.
