Strengthening Urban Resilience in the Life Support of Urban Territorial Communities in Ukraine

On June 24, 2025, Taras Popadynets, Executive Director of the NGO Geothermal Ukraine, delivered a presentation during an online seminar held as part of the “Resilience Academy”—a component of the GIZ Ukraine project “Strengthening Urban Resilience in the Life Support of Urban Territorial Communities in Ukraine” (SUR).

Presentation Topic: “Geothermal Solutions for Sustainable Community Development: Potential and Challenges of Implementing Geothermal Energy Measures in Ukraine. Horizon Europe GEOSYN Project.”

In his presentation, Taras:

Provided an overview of the historical development and current state of geothermal projects in Ukraine;
Highlighted key challenges, barriers, and opportunities for integrating geothermal energy into Ukraine’s sustainable energy sector reconstruction;
Presented the objectives, current status, and progress of the GEOSYN project, in which Geothermal Ukraine participates as part of the Horizon Europe consortium;
Emphasized the technological, environmental, and social advantages of geothermal energy for local communities in Ukraine.

At the conclusion of the event, participants engaged in a question-and-answer session, during which they explored practical aspects of integrating geothermal solutions into existing energy systems. They also had the opportunity to learn from the experiences of European countries in implementing similar technologies.
