Within the framework of Icelandic–Ukrainian cooperation, the Executive Director of the NGO “Geothermal Ukraine,” Taras Popadynets, participated as part of the Ukrainian delegation in the week-long GRÓ Geothermal Training Programme under the auspices of UNESCO, titled “Geothermal Utilization and Development,” held on March 16–21, 2026, in Reykjavik, Iceland.
The initiative was implemented with the support of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Iceland, the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, as well as with the participation of ÍSOR – Iceland GeoSurvey and UNESCO. The program brought together leading Icelandic experts who shared practical experience in the implementation of geothermal projects — from technical and economic aspects to social and legal challenges.
Participants also had a unique opportunity to:
visit one of the largest geothermal power plants in Europe, where the innovative CarbFix project for underground CO₂ storage is being implemented;
learn about the operation of geothermal greenhouse farms;
explore Iceland’s natural geothermal sites.
This experience represents an important step toward the development of geothermal energy in Ukraine as a key component of the sustainable recovery of the country’s energy sector.
We sincerely thank the organizers and partners for their support and for the opportunity to participate in this important initiative.
